Daleville building set for demolition

ECIRPD-Photos-10Downtown Daleville will look very different at at the intersection of Ind. 32 and Walnut Street when the old Stewart’s Furniture Store is torn down by the town starting Jan. 10.

The building housed a thrift store after the furniture business moved operations to another location.

The town recently acquired the property along with several other lots from the Delaware County Redevelopment Commission, which bought the properties earlier in the year. Those buildings included the former Overland Tours building across the street, another one-story commercial building, a house and several vacant lots.

While those buildings have already been razed, the furniture store took much longer to acquire and was deemed so badly damaged that it isn’t salvageable upon the most recent inspection.

Town officials have said they don’t believe any road closures will be needed along Walnut or Ind. 32 during the tear-down process. Shroyer Bros., Inc. is listed as the company doing the demolition.

The destruction of the final building on the corner is part of a long process to clear the corner for future development.

“We are preparing the foundation and we are in the prime location for that kind of development to happen,” said Daleville Town Council President Tom Roberts.

Currently several development possibilities have been pitched for the “new” downtown, including one or more buildings with commercial storefronts on the first floor and apartments on upper floors.
