Jog for Jeff sees boom in money raised

635826885724326562-20151107-101721The fifth annual “Jog for Jeff” saw the largest turnout yet in Daleville on Nov. 7, bringing more than 200 runners to town in honor of a good cause.

With record-setting crowds came record-setting fundraising. The fundraising has nearly doubled in 5 years, raising $6,100 this year compared to their initial numbers in 2011 when the event, a 5K run/walk, began. All the money raised goes toward the Jeff Roberts Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The scholarship is set up in memory of Jeff Roberts, a Daleville senior who died unexpectedly in 2011. The group has raised nearly $20,000 to give to college-bound Daleville and Pride Team seniors in scholarships every year.

“It’s a very emotional weekend for our family, but it makes a hard weekend a little easier,” Amy Roberts, one of the organizers and Jeff’s mother, said.

Roberts is always astounded at the amount of people who come to the event even if they didn’t know Jeff personally.

“We really wondered as things went on if (Jeff would have graduated in 2012) but we keep getting new people as well,” Roberts said.

New runners join every year as the event continues to gain steam, while old friends and family of the Roberts’ continue to come out in stride to show their support.

While Jeff would have graduated in 2012, the Roberts family’s other children frequently have friends come back for the event every year.

Amy Roberts hopes that the event can continue to grow, both to help the scholarship fund and in memory of her son.

The applications for the Jeff Roberts Memorial Scholarship will be available in the spring, and the Roberts family will look at each potential candidate.

The family goal is to offer two $1,000 scholarships every year for Daleville and one to the Delaware County Pride team. Last year they were able to offer more and hope to do so year after year.
